George DENHOLM II

Born in 1838, George was the second son of George DENHOLM and Sarah BARNES. He worked as a farm overseer and married Mary Ann STEVENS in Bothwell in 1863. They had eight children.
George died in 1884, a few weeks before his father. His youngest son was only four years old when he died. Two of the older daughters became domestic servants.

Sarah BARNES

Born in 1813 at Whitchurch in Shropshire, Sarah was convicted of larceny in the Shrewsbury market place and transported to Hobart Town on Borneo in 1828. She was notable as the youngest of 1675 convict women transported to VDL from 1803 to 1829. Her parents were Jonathan BARNES, a day labourer, and Mary.
She was assigned to Bothwell in 1834 and received her ticket of leave in 1835, marrying George DENHOLM in 1836. They had ten children - fitting the purpose for which she was transported.
She died in 1873 at her daughter's home near Oatlands.

George DENHOLM

Born in 1808 at Currie in Scotland, he was the eldest son of Alexander DENHOLM and Margaret CHRISTIE. He was left behind at Currie with his two brothers when their parents went to Van Diemen's land in 1822, but they followed on Wanstead in 1828.
George married Sarah BARNES in 1836 when he was probably working with his father at Currie Banks. He later leased large areas for grazing sheep.
They had ten children. He died at Bothwell in 1884.
